The different development phases

In 2016, RXR began this project articulated in 4 Phases subject to validation:

The 1st phase was to validate the contribution of the RXR ASA systems (inflatable part) already used in the extreme sports protective vests designed by RXR and to find out whether our technology would sufficiently absorb the impact of shots at 430 m/s and 840 m/s.

For the 2nd phase, the specifications evolved: thickness, pressure and resistance had to be optimized to fit under a bullet-proof vest and meet the needs of the combatant (comfort, practicality, strength, reliability…).

To achieve this, we worked on an air cushion covered by a semi-rigid outer shell. Once we had developed the molds and launched a first series, we needed to validate them with fire. Back at LABOCA (LABORATOIRE DU COMMISSARIAT DES ARMEES) for tests.

After more than 200 shots, we were ready for validation using high-speed images. This 3rd phase involved 4 people, a rigorous imaging set-up and an analyst capable of dissecting the tests and analyzing them using a comparative method based on existing reference products.

History

Thanks to the Mission for the Development of Participatory Innovation (MIP) which promotes innovative projects for the French army, the company RXR Protect and Chief Medical Officer Nicolasalso a researcher in war traumatology at the IRBA(Institut de recherche biomédicale des armées), were able to launch a study into the problem of the rear effecta problem that has become very important with the use of flexible and rigid body armor.

On impact, the vest deforms backwards, transmitting a large wave of energy. To minimize this rear effect, a material is placed under the ballistic protection (between it and the wearer’s body) to diffuse and absorb all or a large part of the impact energy.
